Arts Education

Arts Education PhotoThe impact of the arts on our children and their future has become a hot-topic. Educators have for some time recognized the positive effect both exposure and participation with arts have on their young charges. Assertions that art-involved children have fewer discipline problems, perform better academically and are socially better adjusted have been borne out by studies conducted at Stanford, Harvard and Columbia.

Shirley Brice Heath of Stanford discovered in her work with high risk youth that art students are four times more likely to win academic awards and perform better on verbal and math SAT scores than their non-arts participating peers.

Parents can help their children by encouraging participation in school based programs like Muse Machine, their school band, and other arts program/classes available through traditional school curriculum. There are also countless extracurricular arts-based activities available through The Human Race Theatre Company, Dayton Philharmonic, K12 Gallery for Young People, local community theatres and music groups. Dancing lessons are available through Dayton Ballet, Jeraldyne’s School of Dance at Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, South Dayton Dance Theatre, Gem City Ballet, Gary Geis School of Dance as well as scores of smaller local dance studios.

And because we’re all never to old to nuture our artistic side, check out the offerings at the art department of your local colleges and universities.
